During the meeting, Geingob encouraged the parties to continue defending the ideals of the revolution.
The Secretary Generals of Former Liberation Movements from Southern Africa (MYANC, FRELIMO, zanu_pf , SWAPO, CCM) paid a courtesy call on President Hage Geingob at State House.Former liberation movements in southern Africa have vowed to aggressively counter what they term an onslaught on their parties ahead of elections in 2019. Chief administrators of the six ruling parties in Namibia, South Africa, Angola, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Mozambique made the vow when they paid a courtesy call on Namibian President Hage Geingob at State House on Thursday. They earlier met during the week to strengthen relations and ensure that the history of the liberation struggle in the region is maintained. During the meeting, Geingob encouraged the parties to continue defending the ideals of the revolution which brought freedom in the region. Geingob, who was one of senior leaders of SWAPO during the struggle against the apartheid regime, stressed that ruling parties should not be ashamed for being in power and forming partnerships aimed at developing their respective countries.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Swapo secretary general Sophia Shaningwa said the parties have vowed to vigorously campaign “to touch the hearts of our masses in rural areas to understand the visions and missions of our revolution of the blood that was shed. “We have realised that we are commonly challenged, at times socially (and) economically, and we have decided together as organisations, we are going as engines of our parties,” Shaningwa said.
Shaningwa noted that the chief administrators of the governing parties are concerned about the negative use of social media that is being use to attack the parties’ leadership. The Swapo Party (Namibia), Africa National Congress (South Africa), FRELIMO (Mozambique) and Chama Cha Mapinduzi (Tanzania) will contest in national and presidential elections next year. The MPLA of Angola and ZANU-PF of Zimbabwe have retained have retained power after winning the elections in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
