Namibia as a contracting state to the Chicago Convention still observes the mandate under Article 10 of the aforementioned convention to grant all aircraft permission to cross Namibian territory with landing, Simana explained. She said the decision follows two fatal crashes involving the Boeing B737 MAX series aircraft ( MAX 10: US$134.9 million for one single unit ) since October 2018 under unclear circumstances which are disturbingly similar, although not yet finally defined by the ongoing accident investigations.
In the first crash, an Indonesian airliner crashed into the sea with 189 people on board. The Boeing 737, owned by the low-cost airline Lion Air, went down after taking off from the capital Jakarta. The latest accident occurred on Sunday, when an Ethiopian Airlines aircraft crashed en route from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to Nairobi, Kenya, killing all 157 people on board.
