ChatGPT agent is a new version of ChatGPT just launched by OpenAI.
OpenAI has just launched a groundbreaking feature inside ChatGPT: the ChatGPT Agents. These agents aren’t just assistants—they're full-blown digital teammates. Built on top of the Assistants API, these autonomous AI workers can plan and execute complex, multi-step tasks across a variety of domains.

Unlike earlier versions of ChatGPT, which acted more like reactive chat companions, these agents can proactively reason, make decisions, and use tools to complete assignments. They can browse files, run code using the built-in Python interpreter, fetch and manipulate documents, analyze data, interact with APIs, and even integrate into existing workflows.

For example, say you run a content studio. A ChatGPT agent could automatically draft social media posts based on your editorial calendar, pull analytics from your spreadsheet, recommend post timing based on engagement history, and schedule those posts with integration to tools like Zapier or IFTTT. And it can do it with no code—just conversation.

The implications for developers are massive. With the Assistants API, developers can create purpose-built agents tailored to industries like finance, customer service, education, and even law. For example, legal tech startups are building agents that review contracts, check for inconsistencies, and suggest edits—all while remaining secure and compliant.

OpenAI isn't alone in the AI agent race. Companies like Anthropic are building their own systems with similar goals, and Google’s new Gemini Agents promise deep workspace integration. But what sets OpenAI’s approach apart is its modular, developer-friendly design—and that it’s available today, in the most widely used AI chat interface.

Users of the ChatGPT web app can already access agents by subscribing to ChatGPT Plus or Enterprise. As of now, these agents can be assigned tools like file handling and code execution, and they’ll soon expand to real-time actions like calendar integration and live app control.

And it doesn’t stop there. OpenAI is reportedly working on agents that can operate across your browser tabs, interact with your operating system, and even collaborate with other agents to complete multi-party workflows. This has the potential to reshape how small teams and solopreneurs work—effectively multiplying output without multiplying staff.

There are, of course, concerns. AI hallucinations still happen, and security questions remain around how agents handle sensitive tasks. But OpenAI has included a robust permissions system and guardrails to minimize risks. You can define which tools your agents can use, what data they can access, and whether or not they can take actions without confirmation.

Whether you’re a solo creator, a startup founder, or an enterprise product manager, the era of AI task delegation is here—and ChatGPT Agents could be the teammate you didn’t know you needed.
