What is Meta AI in WhatsApp?
Meta AI is a conversational assistant developed by Meta Platforms that lives directly inside WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram. It lets users ask questions, generate creative content, plan events, and even create AI-powered images — all without leaving the app. Unlike previous chatbots, Meta AI uses real-time information from Microsoft Bing Search, making it more accurate for live updates.
“We want to make AI accessible in the apps people already use every day,” said Mark Zuckerberg when announcing Meta AI’s rollout in April 2025.
Ensure you’ve updated WhatsApp to the latest version on Google Play or the App Store. Once updated, you’ll notice a circular “Meta AI” icon above your chat list or next to the “new message” button. Tap it to open a dedicated chat window with Meta AI. Alternatively, in any existing chat, type “@Meta AI” followed by your question or command, and the assistant will respond directly inside the conversation.
Using Meta AI for everyday tasks
You can interact with Meta AI just like you would with ChatGPT or Gemini. Try commands like:
“@Meta AI write a thank-you note for my client meeting.” “@Meta AI find the best flights from London to Rome next weekend.” “@Meta AI summarize the last 50 messages in this chat.” The assistant provides fast, contextual replies, can rewrite text, explain complex topics, or give you creative ideas — directly inline in your chats.
Image generation
Meta AI includes a visual tool called “Imagine”, allowing users to create custom AI images by typing prompts such as: “Imagine a golden retriever surfing at sunset” or “Imagine a futuristic city skyline at night.” The feature supports quick refinement, so you can reply “make it more realistic” or “add neon lights,” and Meta AI will regenerate accordingly. These images can be shared instantly with contacts.
Smart search
The assistant integrates Bing Search and location data, meaning you can ask for local weather, nearby restaurants, or movie showtimes. In group chats, Meta AI can compile suggestions from members and present options for dates, times, or locations — perfect for event planning or travel coordination.
For businesses
WhatsApp Business users can also access Meta AI for tasks like writing product descriptions, drafting customer replies, or analyzing sales messages. Meta confirmed it will integrate with Meta Business Suite later this year to automate support and marketing messages. Small creators can use Meta AI to craft promotional content, create captions, or design ad visuals directly in chat.
Privacy
Meta AI operates within Meta’s privacy framework. Chats with Meta AI are not end-to-end encrypted, but your normal conversations with friends and businesses remain private. Users can delete Meta AI chat history or control personalization from WhatsApp’s settings menu under “Meta AI Preferences.” Meta also ensures all generated content is labeled as AI-produced when shared publicly.
As of late 2025, Meta AI is available in the United States, Canada, the U.K., India, and select African and Southeast Asian countries. Image generation is still region-restricted. The assistant occasionally gives inaccurate or outdated responses, especially for fast-changing events, and does not yet support advanced file handling or voice cloning.
Meta plans to connect Meta AI across WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and eventually its metaverse experiences. Future updates will include real-time document summarization, meeting transcriptions, and AI avatars that represent you in chats and calls.
