Mozilla is rolling out a privacy-focused AI that runs entirely on-device with secure translations, accessibility enhancements.
Mozilla is rolling out a new generation of privacy-first AI tools baked directly into Firefox, designed to run entirely on-device. Dubbed as a suite of intelligent enhancements for browsing, translations, and accessibility, this initiative ensures your data never leaves your device.

In a blog post, Mozilla explained that all AI functionality—from generating alt‑text for images to translating webpages—now happens locally. They emphasize that this model prioritizes privacy by preventing any personal content from being sent to external servers.

One flagship feature is automatic alt-text generation, which enhances accessibility without transmitting image data anywhere. Another key upgrade is on-device translation, courtesy of Project Bergamot, allowing full-page translation without cloud processing—ideal for users who want seamless browsing without privacy compromises.

Mozilla has also introduced smart tab groups: AI-generated cluster names like “Recipe Research” or “Work Projects” and suggestions for related tabs, all derived from local context. Likewise, the experimental link preview tool summarizes articles when you hover, without ever sending the URL to a third party

In addition, Mozilla offers a choice of AI chatbots that operate in the sidebar. You can pick models like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or HuggingChat, with full control over installing or removing them, and all usage data remains on your device unless you expressly share it.

Firefox 139, released in late May 2025, includes significant upgrades: more capable translation for browser extensions, improved link previews, better support for pasting images with transparency, and enhanced PDF tools—all while keeping processing entirely local.

Mozilla’s stance is clear: privacy and AI don’t have to be at odds. CEO Laura Chambers has underscored the organization’s independence from big tech giants and its commitment to building private-by-design features in Firefox.

Still, questions remain about performance on low-end devices and the extent of offline models’ capabilities. But by offering secure, on-device AI that handles everything from translations to tab management, Mozilla is positioning Firefox as a rare browser that enhances productivity and accessibility without compromising user trust.
